CRediT Taxonomy

The CRediT Taxonomy aims to identify and describe the most common types of contributions to scientific research based on the roles of the collaborators. The roles are detailed below:

  • Conceptualization: Ideas, formulation, or development of the overall objectives and goals of the research.
  • Data curation: Management activities to document (metadata production), clean, and maintain research data (including software code, when necessary to interpret the data itself) for initial use and subsequent reuse.
  • Formal analysis: Application of statistical, mathematical, computational, or other formal techniques to analyze or synthesize study data.
  • Fundraising: Securing financial support for the project.
  • Research: Conducting research and the research process, specifically performing experiments, collecting data, or gathering evidence.
  • Methodology: Developing or designing the methodology and creating models.
  • Project management: Responsibility for managing and coordinating the planning and execution of the research activity.
  • Resources: Provision of study materials, reagents, supplies, patients, laboratory samples, animals, instrumentation, computer resources, or other analytical tools.
  • Software: Programming, software development, computer program design, and implementation of code.
  • Supervision: Responsibility for overseeing and leading the planning and conduct of research activities, including mentoring individuals outside the core team.
  • Validation: Verification, either as part of the activity or separately, of the general replicability or reproducibility of the results, experiments, or other research outputs.
  • Visualization: Preparation, creation, or presentation of the published work, specifically the visualization or presentation of data.
  • Original Drafting: Preparation, creation, or presentation of published work, specifically the drafting of the initial manuscript (substantive translation is included).
  • Drafting-revision and editing: Preparation, creation, or presentation of the published work by members of the original research group, specifically critical review, commentary, or revision. Stages prior to or following publication must be included.
