Functions of the Editorial Director
1. Defining and maintaining the editorial line
Establishing the scope: Precisely defines which areas of the social sciences or humanities the journal covers.
Updating policies: Adapts evaluation criteria to global trends (Open Science policies or regulations on the use of Artificial Intelligence in research).
Call for submissions: Plans and coordinates each issue.
2. Managing the peer review process
Ensures the rigor and scientific validity of published material.
Initial screening: Evaluates received manuscripts to decide whether they proceed to review or are immediately rejected for not meeting the format, subject matter, or minimum quality standards.
Assigning reviewers: Identifies and selects 2 to 3 suitable experts for each manuscript.
Mediation and conflict resolution: Analyzes the reviewers' opinions and makes the final decision: Accept, publish with modifications (minor/major), or reject.
3. Quality Control and Ethical Considerations
The editor acts as a filter against academic misconduct.
Plagiarism Detection: Uses software tools and their own expertise in the field to prevent plagiarism.
Ensures Anonymity: In the double-blind peer review system, the editor ensures that neither the authors nor the reviewers know each other's identities.
Management of Retractions or Errata: Resolves post-publication ethical disputes if it is proven that an article contained fraud or serious errors.
4. Coordination of Editorial Production
Once an article is accepted, the editorial director oversees its transformation into a readable and professional final product.
Proofreading and Translation: Ensures that the texts are cohesive, clear, and adhere to the required citation guidelines.
Layout and Design: Coordinates with the designer and technical staff the conversion of the manuscript to professional formats (PDF, HTML, XML).
Identifier assignment: Manages article metadata, including assigning the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and indexing in databases.
5. Dissemination, indexing, and public relations
Journal indexing: Submits and maintains noesis in prestigious databases (such as Latindex, Redalyc, and SciELO) in compliance with their strict quality criteria.
Communication strategy: Promotes published articles through academic social networks to increase their visibility and impact (citations).
Editorial committee leadership: Convenes and chairs meetings with the editorial committee and the journal's international committee to evaluate the publication's direction.
Functions of the Editorial Committee
1. Scientific advice and editorial policy
The committee helps define the publication's direction.
Defines scientific policy: Participates in regular meetings to review whether the journal's focus remains relevant or should be broadened to include new theoretical approaches and emerging methodologies.
Updates quality criteria: Advises the editorial director of Nóesis on the adoption of new international standards (COPE ethical guidelines, Open Science policies, or the use of artificial intelligence in research).
2. Content evaluation and mediation
Although they don't always evaluate every text, they are the editorial director's most trusted filter.
Manuscript evaluation: They act as first-line reviewers for manuscripts that fall precisely within their area of expertise.
Ethical and quality filter: They assist the editorial director with the initial screening when there are doubts about whether an article is of sufficient quality to be sent to external reviewers.
Arbitration in cases of conflict: If two external reviewers give completely opposing opinions (one recommends "publish" and the other "reject"), the editor-in-chief usually calls on a member of the committee to act as the final arbiter.
3. Networking and talent acquisition
The editorial committee is the bridge between the journal and the global scientific community.
They recommend reviewers: When the editorial director cannot find reviewers for a very specific topic, committee members suggest names from their own academic network.
Attracting key authors: They actively invite leading researchers from their respective universities and countries to submit their best work to the journal.
Functions of the International Editorial Board
The functions of the international editorial board consist primarily of promoting knowledge, raising awareness of the journal at conferences, seminars, and within their own academic networks, thereby increasing the likelihood of receiving citations. They also support internationalization; their mere presence demonstrates that the publication has diverse institutional backing and is not limited to a local or national sphere. Finally, they are consulted periodically, at least once per semester, regarding improvements that may be needed.
