En 1994 se publicó en inglés y en español un libro llamado Zona Caliente cuyo autor, Richard Preston, abordó un hecho casi desconocido para el público en general: el surgimiento de una nueva enfermedad de carácter apocalíptico capaz de exterminar la vida humana(1). Se trata de una enfermedad a la que se le ha puesto el nombre de Ébola, en referencia al río del mismo nombre que está próximo al hábitat donde se supone que surgió, y que fue detectada por científicos en 1976. El ébola consiste en una fiebre hemorrágica extremadamente patógena al hombre y de impacto fulminante(2). De entrada, el autor advierte que la trama de su libro no es inventada, que la crónica de acontecimientos que refiere es real.
